We, Bristol Care Homes, are happy to be sharing with you the latest partnership report received from our partners, Bristol Beacon, about our Annual Care Concert.
Thank you for Making Space for Music!
Because when you make space for music, you make space for amazing moments
that last a lifetime.
We are so grateful for your transformational support of our work with older people. We are proud to share this report for our third year of partnership around care homes concerts.
Live Immersive Concert
The concert
On Friday 7 June, Bristol Beacon welcomed over 200 residents from care homes across the city and wider area (including Almondsbury, Fishponds, Horfield, and Thornbury) to Bristol Cathedral for an intimate performance with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO) to give residents the chance to hear orchestral music Live.
Before the performance started at 2pm, the care home residents and staff were calmly welcomed by the Bristol Beacon front-of-house team into the cathedral’s glorious nave before being seated for the performance to begin.
The programme
The orchestra played Dvofak’s Symphony No. 9, instantly recognisable to classical music fans. To enrich the experience for the audience, each movement was sensitively interspersed with an illuminating introduction from Jonathan James (Bristol-based conductor, music educator, writer and presenter).
When the orchestra was in full flow, the audience was enveloped by music as the sound of the orchestra permeated the historic site. The atmosphere was magic.
Audience feedback
“I love the whole idea that Bristol Beacon isn’t just for people who can see live music easily”, care home resident

Looking Forward
We are incredibly thankful for the ongoing support of Bristol Care Homes in our work with Older People over the last three years.
Since reopening our fully transformed building in November last year, we have hit the ground running, putting into action our ambitious programme for engaging with older people in our community. Our partnership with Bristol Care Homes has been instrumental in helping us to make this happen and directly enabled us to engage with more older people in the local area, helping to alleviate feelings of social isolation and loneliness through the power of music.
We look forward to planning the next Live concert performance for residents of care homes in Bristol to attend, and put into place the learning that we have benefitted from this year, such as improving transport arrangements. Additionally, this October, our Celebrating Age Festival will showcase our programme more widely whilst also providing the perfect opportunity to recruit members to our Older People Steering Group – a new initiative that will inform the strategic development of our Ageing Better strand of work – a priority strategic area for Bristol Beacon.
Through Ageing Better, we recognise the value of reintroducing older people into our spaces through accessible, interactive and fun opportunities with music and – in partnership with Bristol Care Homes – we look forward to playing our part as a world-class venue in Bristol with a significant role to play within the local community that values and celebrates older people.
