Review Of The Month – Glebe House

My Mum moved into Glebe House, Almondsbury, in October 2023. She had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in the summer of 2020, and, although physically very well, she was no longer able to live safely and independently at home.

From the very first time I visited Glebe House, I knew it would be the right place for my Mum.
The building and gardens are beautifully maintained and impeccably clean. The rooms are bright, and the decor is of the highest standard. The gardens are beautiful, both to look out on and to walk around.
Residents are encouraged to enjoy the outdoor spaces, with help provided when needed. Tea and coffee are served outside in nice weather, and ice cream in the summer.

The care my Mum received and the support given to us as a family are the main reasons I’m writing this feedback.

All of the staff, without exception, are gentle, respectful, and kind to residents at all times. The patience and compassion they bring to their work are exemplary. They treat residents as though they are part of their own family, with a genuine desire to know and understand each person fully.

When she was well, my Mum enjoyed trips out – on the bus to local places of interest, to the theatre for the pantomime, to the local ice rink, the garden centre, and to the pub for coffee nearly every day.
When indoors, she took part in craft and cooking activities.

These activities were all shared on social media platforms, a brilliant idea for family and friends who live far away.

Sadly, my Mum was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukaemia and passed away just five weeks later. She was nursed in the same room she originally moved into in the residential unit (even though the nursing unit is upstairs) – because the managers and staff felt it was important she remained in familiar surroundings with people she knew. Nurses from the upstairs unit came to her as needed.

Their determination to do what was right for my Mum, despite the extra workload, was yet another example of their exceptional care. The palliative care she received in her final weeks was excellent.

I work as the Lead Nurse for Palliative and End of Life Care at a local NHS trust, and have been a nurse for over 30 years.
It can be difficult to be “just a daughter” in these situations without wanting to interfere, but at no point during my Mum’s time at Glebe House did I feel the need to do so.

All staff were thoughtful and respectful of my role as a daughter and as a professional, especially when it came to administering end-of-life medication and setting up a continuous subcutaneous infusion.

In Mum’s final days, when my sisters and I were spending long hours, during the day and overnight, the staff looked after us with the same kindness they showed her. They brought us food and drinks and checked in regularly to make sure we were okay.

The kindness shown to us and the genuine sadness expressed by staff when Mum passed away deeply moved us. It was yet another sign of the real affection they feel for their residents.

In over 30 years of nursing, I cannot recall working with – or witnessing – a more cohesive team with such a shared commitment to excellence.
The care provided to both residents and their families is flawless.

They fully understand the emotional weight of moving a loved one into residential care and provide unmatched support. The end-of-life care they deliver is nothing short of exemplary.

There is not a single thing I could suggest to improve the care at Glebe House.

I am so thankful they had a place for my Mum when she needed it most.
